Why Clients Ask for Day Rates

What a day rate is really buying for the client and how to decide whether to offer one.

Clients ask for day rates when they want your attention for a block of time instead of a running estimate. It simplifies planning on their side.

A day rate is usually about more than hours. The client may be paying for focus, speed, and the certainty that you are committed to a specific window.

That means the day rate should not be copied from hourly math without thought. It needs to reflect the value of reserved time and the work you cannot take during that block.

If your day rate is too low, you end up selling a chunk of your calendar too cheaply. If it is too high, the client may prefer a smaller scope or a different engagement.

The right answer is usually not to avoid day rates. It is to define what a day means before you quote it.
