Billable Hours Explained

What billable hours are, why they matter, and why they are never the same as total working hours.

Billable hours are the hours you can actually charge for. Total working hours are everything else: admin, sales, planning, revisions, learning, and downtime.

A lot of pricing mistakes start when someone assumes every working hour can be billed. That assumption makes the rate look lower than it should.

The more non-billable work you have, the higher your hourly floor needs to be. That is why billable hours matter more than a simple salary comparison.

If you track your billable hours honestly for a month, you get a better rate estimate than most generic pricing advice can give you.

Use the billable-hour number as a reality check, not an aspiration.
